• Mellencamp musical to take later bow than planned

  NEW YORK (Billboard) - The John Mellencamp/Stephen Kingmusical "Ghost Brothers of Darkland County," which was set toopen

  at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre in April 2009, has beenpostponed.

  The Alliance said Tuesday (May 6) that the project has beendelayed because of "unanticipated scheduling problems whichcould not be resolved in time for the production."

  According to a statement, members of the creative team"realized the script would not be ready by spring 2009."

  Mellencamp wrote the score, and King wrote the script.Mellencamp previously said the play, which is set in Lake BelleReve, Mississippi, in 1957, is about "two brothers; they're 19years old or 20, maybe 18 or 21, who are very competitive anddislike each other immensely. The father takes them to thefamily vacation place, a cabin that the boys hadn't been tosince they were kids."

  The Alliance now plans to present the show during its2009-2010 season.

• "Persepolis" to take second bow, sans subtitles

  NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - The French film"Persepolis," an Oscar-nominated animated feature, will returnto theaters

  in an English-language version on April 11.

  The Sony Pictures Classics release centers on a young girlin Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Co-written andco-directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, it'sbased on Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel, aninternational best-seller.

  The English-language version of "Persepolis" features thevoices of Chiara Mastroianni and her mother, Catherine Deneuve,reprising the roles they played in the original film: Marjaneand Marjane's mother, Tadji. Sean Penn will provide the voiceof Marjane's father, Ebi; Gena Rowlands plays Marjane'sgrandmother; Iggy Pop is Uncle Anouche; and Amethyste Frezignacplays young Marjane.

  The English soundtrack was recorded under the direction ofSatrapi and Paronnaud as the French-language version of thefilm was being completed.

  The film will bow on 100 screens nationwide.

  The French-language version was released by Sony PicturesClassics in the U.S. in December. In addition to its AcademyAward nomination for best animated feature, "Persepolis" wasFrance's official entry for the best foreign-language filmOscar and shared the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes FilmFestival.

• Elton John and Lee Hall Take a Bow at 'Billy Elliot''s Australian Opening

  Performances began Nov. 13 prior to the official Dec. 13 opening at the Australian venue.

  Based on the 2000 film about a workin

  g class lad's dream of dancing ballet, the musical is staged by the film's director Stephen Daldry. Music is composed by John with a book and lyrics by Hall. Peter Darling is charged with choreography for the dance-heavy show.

  Rhys Kosakowski -' 'one of the four young stars who will alternate the title role along with Lochlan Denholm, Rarmian Newton and Nick Twiney - played the opening night show.

  The cast of 75 also features Australian stage veterans Genevieve Lemon (as Mrs Wilkinson), Richard Piper (Dad), Lola Nixon (Grandma), Justin Smith (Tony), John Xintavelonis (Mr Braithwaite) and Linal Haft ' '(George).

  Billy Elliot the Musical debuted in London in May 2005 at the Victoria Palace Theatre. The work is Broadway-bound for a Sept. 17, 2008, launch at the Imperial Theatre.

  The design team includes Ian MacNeil (set), Nicky Gillibrand (costumes), Rick Fisher (lighting) and Paul Arditti (sound). Martin Koch handles music supervision.

  Billy Elliot the Musical is produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Jon Finn and Sally Greene for Universal Pictures, Working Title and Old Vic Productions.
